Welcome the 2021-2022 School Year at Parkside Elementary School

July 2021
Dear Parents,

Welcome to the Spanish class 2021-2022. My name is Señora Maria Cantu-Hibron and I am originally from Monterrey, Mexico. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Spanish K-12 teaching certification, Master's Degree in Spanish Language and Culture, and an Ed. S. In Instructional Technology.

I am very delighted to be your child’s Spanish teacher and I believe that this will be one of the most successful, productive, and enjoyable school years. We both need to be partners in the learning process and that will be possible with your support and continue encouraging. I will provide meaningful context to begin language acquisition, to develop communication skills, to build an understanding, and to appreciate the Spanish speaking country's culture. Also, providing a safe environment to explore and learn a second language; as well as, a place to develop an appreciation for diversity.

The Spanish program at Parkside follows the “APS Exposure model (30-90 minutes a week) and focuses on an introduction to culture and language and is taught primarily in English”.

In addition, we focus teaching on the 5 World-Readiness Standards for Language learners: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparison, and Communities.

Students can self-assess and checklist their progress following the ACTFL Can-Do Statements, according to the number of hours they are exposed to the language, the expectations are for them to perform at the Novice level. https://www.actfl.org/sites/default/files/pdfs/Can-Do_Statements_2015.pdf

We believe that open communication between parent/guardian and the teachers play an important role in the success of each student. If you have any questions, concerns, or comment about your child's performance, please do not hesitate to contact me. ¡Hasta la vista!

Sincerely,

María Cantú- Hibron Ed. S
